Sustainable Palm Oil Procurement
Palm oil is an edible vegetable oil extract from the fruit of oil palm trees, the scientific name is Elaeis guineensis, and the trees are cultivated in tropical regions. This versatile oil is used in foodstuffs, detergents and much else, and demand for it is growing worldwide. However, a number of problems with palm oil have been pointed out regarding matters such as agricultural development and the work environment. Based on its CSR Procurement Policy, the Pigeon Group in December 2020 joined the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) as an ordinary member. The Pigeon Group is advancing the use of certification systems based on the RSPO’s book-and-claim* approach for the procurement of palm oil.Going forward, the Group will advance the sustainable procurement and use of palm oil in its business operations.
*Book-and-claim system
The RSPO issues certification credits (securities) for certified palm oil, which is palm oil produced by RSPO-certified producers. Under this system, these certification credits can be purchased to support certified palm-oil producers.
